Media Mashup!
Hi Everybody,
it was great seeing some of you again at Roberto’s presentation on networks last week.
Its interesting because we actually started off our project - which is focusing on understanding and responding creatively to portrayals of the election in the Media - with a big Media Map of all the kinds of media we could think of, from YouTube to T-shirts. Now that we know more about networks, maybe we can redesign our map to show the interconnectedness of different forms of media.
Every week brings new excitement and our teens are bringing tons of energy to the project. These weeks have really zoomed by, and it seems like everyone, definitely myself included, is paying more attention to HOW political messages reach us every day, and being inspired to think of WHAT we can do through this project to take back some of the control!
More details on the project to come, but here’s some of what we’ve been doing: collage/paintings of the candidates; “ransom note” style poetry to be performed as spoken word; interviewing staff at the program about their thoughts on how the media effects them.
We’ve got cameras rolling every class capturing the work - and play - to turn into a short video for our presentation.
If anyone else is planning on doing video work, Scherazade and Wesley from Project Think Different have been a huge resource for all kinds of advice, and I’m sure Christine can hook you up with them.
More news to come, maybe some pics!

Networks for Net Work: An Introduction to Networks and Network Analysis
“Networks are present everywhere. All we need is an eye for them”
Albert-László Barabási, Linked
The complexity and scale of social issues that nonprofits are tackling in their daily work are paradoxical if compared to the actual resources that they can access. But a new approach is emerging, an approach based on sharing work and combining resources with networks of like-minded partners rather than on pursuing colossal missions alone. Using stories and case studies, this presentation will introduce working definitions of networks Read more
